Is it convenient to say publicly that you won the Euromillions?

Well, there was the ticket of 190 million euros!!

The lucky have been an English family who have chosen to say publicly through a press conference. In different media have published their names and seen pictures and videos of this couple giving and celebrating his fortune.

Being English, the award has not been given in euros but its equivalent, for the currency exchange, which was of 148.6 million pounds.

But, Is it convenient say publicly that you just won a big jackpot EuroMillions?

In the case of this English family, I think they have been carried away by the euphoria and joy of the moment but it seems to me they had never thought what is most convenient in these cases.

From my point of view, I think the four winds announce this sort of thing can only spell trouble for the lucky.

How many celebrities, businessmen and footballers have suffered the kidnapping of family members, have been scammed, have received bribes, etc. by envy or greed of others?

If I think about the pros and cons of saying publicly that has touched a big EuroMillions jackpot, at first I can think of more cons than pros, but let's see:

Consider first the 'pros':

  • A bonus would be that you mention it once and avoid the gossip, rumors and others that would arise among family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Everyone would know the reason for all the upcoming changes that will occur in your life.
  • People will stop you on the street, greet you, be famous, will talk to you and you favor that financial advisors, asset managers and all types of commercial approach you to sell you their services.

Consider now the 'cons':

  • Your identity is public for good people but also for all types of offenders. Here come the fear of kidnappings, threats, extortion, blackmail, etc..
  • Envy of all kinds. If das, das why, if you do not give, why not give. Some as simple as it would have paid to two cups and the other one. Maybe the envy of strangers not affect you at all but if they come from family and friends can affect you much assumptions.
  • Loss of privacy. Everything you say and do can be used against you. People will judge everything you do. They talk a lot about you and you can not walk around your neighborhood life without someone pointing and muttered.

Publicize this option could be feasible for very extroverted, who crave to be the center of attention, being famous and like others talk about them.

But for much of the mortals, the shy, introverted and reserved may prefer not to say publicly and minimize the expectation as far as possible. In the latter case there is an additional advantage that does not exist in the first case...  you are always in time to make it public when you consider appropriate.

As for the lucky Englishmen have won, I would like to congratulate you and I hope that they will use their money with ethic and wisdom.
